This oil-slickened dog was found wandering along Judge Perez Drive in a Chalmette, La. neighborhood on Tuesday.

The dog is OK.

A photograph this week of the shaggy-haired dog covered in oily residue in flood-wrecked Chalmette, La., appeared in newspapers nationwide, prompting calls and e-mails from as far away as Connecticut and Massachusetts wanting to know its fate.

Friday, Debbie Lavallee of Quinlan, Texas, from Lone Star Equine Rescue, and Dr. Lee Ann Fugler of the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine picked up the dog, along with other animals saved from the floodwaters. They were taken Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, La., to be cared for until being matched with their owners or adopted.

Dallas Morning News photographer Tom Fox, who took the original picture, found the abandoned dog again Friday and alerted the animal specialists in Chalmette.

LSU has set up an animal rescue hotline, 225-578-6111, for information about retrieved and lost pets.
